Youth and Porn

The Australian Institute has recently released a survey on Australian youth and pornography. It's an interesting read (to download a summary click here and goto to the "What's New" section).

In a nutshell, the report found that:

* 73% of boys have watched X-rated videos, whereas only 11% of girls have. The majority of boys watched them very infrequently (less than once every three months).

* Internet porn had been seen accidently by 84% of boys and 60% of girls. These percentages drop to 38 and 2 when asked if they deliberately sort them out. Only 11% of boys (and no girls) saw internet porn more than once a month.

These figures don't really surprise me. When I was young, X-rated videos were pretty common (several of my primary school friends had seen then, and at that age group we were way younger than the youths examined in this report). When I was the age of the kids in this report, all of my friends had seen X-rated videos. Internet porn was much rarer because nobody had a internet connection back then.

Personally, this doesn't worry too much. Most teenagers are pretty sexually deprived, so a bit of curiosity is to be expected. As long as it doesn't grow into a habit, it's all part of growing up.
