The Fix Is In

With regards to the McIntyre and McKitrick attack on the Mann climate reconstruction (see past posts for details), the ball is firmly in M&M court. Mann, Bradley and Hughes have responded, and if their response is correct, M&M don't have a leg to stand on.

However, the propaganda machines are cranking out their bullshit; and the meme that the climate was warmer in the MWP is already going around. It doesn't matter that M&M's case is currently near death, nor that Mann's results have been replicated by a number of research groups.

Slashdot, has already had a discussion on this. Their intro reads:

An anonymous reader writes "An important paper that re-examines historical climate data was published on 28 October in the respected journal Energy & Environment. (The paper is also available here.) According to an article in Canada's National Post, the paper shows that a "pillar of the Kyoto Accord is based on false calculations, incorrect data and an overtly biased selection of climate records." (USA Today also has a story.) This paper will undoubtedly be controversial and should stir a vigourous data review." Update: 11/05 14:54 GMT by T: newyhouse points out a similarly contrarian 2001 Economist article by Bjorn Lomborg, author of The Skeptical Environmentalist.

They provide links to M&M's paper, it's companion website and to a couple of uncritical articles supporting it. There are no links to the MGH rebuttal.

I don't know whether or not the person who submitted the article was aware of the full story or not, but it seems likely that for the next few years we are going to see trolls bragging that the MWP was warmer than the 20th century.
