Don't Believe The Hype

The latest Chemical and Engineering News has an interesting exchange of letters between Eric Drexler and Richard Smalley on the subject of nanotechnology.

Smalley is somewhat more skeptical than Drexler on what nanotechnology can achieve. Personally, I'm with Smalley, the types of nano-machines that Drexler proposes strike me as being ungodly complex. You would have a better chance of counting the atoms in the universe than constructing the types of machines which Drexler proposes. Any molecular engineering which we carry out will, in all likelihood, be done via good old fashioned chemistry and biology.

Still, I'd love to be proved wrong. But somehow I don't think so.
